You might think that the arrival of fall means rich autumnal hair colors. But what if you stepped outside the box and away from hair color conventions? Think cool, refreshing shades of blue, green, pink and purple, worn either all-over or in multi-tonal combinations.
Cool tones for autumn
Surprise everyone with a cool-toned hair color this fall. Color trends we've noticed emerging this season include delicious dusky pink over a blond base, bold blues and greens with just a hint of dark grey, and that festival classic that we just can't seem to give up; rainbow hair!
The visible roots trend
You can stop worrying about your roots showing – it's now a thing to let your color grow out a few inches. Dark roots add a rock n'roll, carefree vibe to colored hair and, of course, it means fewer trips to the hair salon.
Ombre, balayage and dip-dye techniques
• Fresh ombre
Ombre is when the hair color gradually lightens from one shade into another, and is usually seen in a brunette-to-blond palette. But why not use the same technique with cool-toned pastels? Blond hair that develops into pink hues, or a brown base that turns lavender, for example.
• Creative balayage
Balayage is an art that requires the skills of a true professional. Hair is painted freehand where the light would naturally hit to create subtle highlighting that starts on the roots and increases down the lengths. The result looks incredibly natural, even if you've chosen some less-than-natural cool colors...
• Happy dip-dye
Something about dip-dye brings out a sense of joy and whimsy. Literally as if you've dipped your hair in a bright pot of color, dip-dye is a classic two-ton coloring technique. It's up to you how extreme you want the color demarcation to be, but we say go for it!
