Sweet, sweeping balayage

Who knew it was so easy to pick up French? Add a little 'je ne sais quoi' to your look (and your phrase book) by opting for French Balayage this season.

Did you know?

Balayage was born at a L'Oréal Professionnel salon in Paris in 1974. By 2018 it was time for a comeback. Not to be confused with highlights, the expert technique sweeps discreet colour from root to tip and allows for a bespoke look. Unlike foils, the result is more natural and subtle, working on both lighter and darker hair. Elegant, and chic, it's an easy to wear summer staple.

And, with 4 new salon services, it's time for the iconic, effortlessly refined French look to take the world by storm again.

Social trend

Whether your're browsing Insta or cruising FB, you'll see that the #balayage is trending. And for good reason! The cult 'do has become a global online sensation.

It's all about bespoke Balayage (not highlights!) using L'Oréal Professionnel Majirel, INOA and DIA as well as Blond Studio.

L'Oréal Professionnel even teamed up with the planet's hottest fashionistas at Vogue to launch a pioneering French Balayage show in Shanghaï. Now, that's hot news!

Taking it even further, four of the world's top colorists were invited to Paris to re-invent French Balayage in four different ways. So now you can choose your look – from the Original French Balayage to the Soft French Balayage, via the Defined French Balayage or the Intense French Balayage.

The first is the most classic for an effortless look; the 'Soft French' is for those who prefer elegance and subtlety with a totally blended look. Want to go 'Defined'? You'll get a clearer cut sweep with visible strands, yet still subtle and chic. Prefer 'Intense'? It's all about a stronger, bolder contrast. While each level offers more distinction, the principal of Balayage is still extremely discreet and remains elegance personified.

The experts' verdict

And, it's good news for everyone. Celebrity colorist Min Kim @minkimcolorist confirms "Balayage is not just for blondes. This soft technique brings brightness around the face, and movement on the back of the hair" while Jack Howard @jackhowardcolor adds "It's an effortless and uncomplicated look to highlight the eyes and contour the cheekbones."

So subtle, so natural. No wonder we love it. Get swept up in it!

Tip: Protect your radiant balayage colouring with L'Oréal Professionnel Serie expert Vitamino Color A:OX for softer, shinier, fresher hair.
