Hat hair: keep it up or let it down?

If there's one thing that keeps us optimistic when the temperature starts to drop, apart from the arrival of the holiday season, it's the selection of woolen or felt hats we'll be wearing to keep warm. But how should you style your hair when you're wearing a wide-brimmed hat or a knit cap? Up or down, choose your side

Show off elegant loose hair with a hat

Far from being a form of camouflage, a hat is easily a fashion accessory like no other. It acts as a crown to any look, from elegant to daring, depending on what style you choose. It's therefore the ideal ally to show off your hair! If you didn't have time to curl your hair this morning, don't fret! Your wide-brimmed hat and texturizing spray will save the day. You love walking by the sea but your hair hates the humidity? If you don't want to have to tie it up, a straw boat hat and hair oil will help tame the waves. With a hat you can always add a 'je ne sais quoi' touch to your hair even if you aren't having the best of hair days naturally.

Tie it up, sure, but not any old how

Where some beauty dilemmas are purely a question of taste, tying up your hair or not is a different story. Depending on what your headwear of choice is, it is very likely that, once removed, the hat will leave a trace on your hair - just like when you remove a hair elastic from your ponytail at the end of the day. To avoid this, especially if you spend most of your day indoors, tying your hair up is a wiser choice. The only difficulty with this, however, is that you must choose your hairstyle carefully based on the type of hat you wear.

For a wide-brimmed hat, it's a good idea to opt for a braid. Apply texturizing powder to your hair to add body and then loosely braid it into a mermaid or fishtail braid to give yourself a hippie chic look. If your hat of choice is a beanie, a low side ponytail with a touch of dry shampoo or hairspray will give you a sporty chic vibe. For a bowler hat, use styling gel to create pigtail braids which will give you a sophisticated British vibe. If preppy is more your style choose a beret as a hat and a low bun for your hairstyle. Don't forget to add a touch of hairspray at the end to keep the look intact the whole day.
