Add a bit of mystery with a pretty, witchy, messy bun

Sophisticated yet relaxed, high-end but low-maintenance, the messy bun has everything going for it, and leaves everyone guessing who you are.

There isn't just one way to style a messy updo: here are four inspiring buns to show what wonders you can create with just one elastic and the right styling tools...

1. So low, so messy, bun

If your hair seems to have a character of its own, a big low messy bun might be a way of celebrating its eccentricities while also keeping it under some control. Size is not our enemy, and a little bit of back-combing around the crown of the head can create a chic silhouette. Try the Savage Panache styling powder for maximum volume and texture.

2. A mountainous matte updo

From make-up to accessories and even hair texture, it's all about an urban matte finish. Give your high messy bun a modern edge by using a dry shampoo or mattifying spray before flicking the hair forwards and scooping into a high ponytail. Twist the ends around one-another until they naturally start to curl into a bun shape. Tuck in the ends, spritz with hairspray, and you're done.

3. Smooth vs. spikes

This high messy updo has a super-smooth top section that contrasts with the big messy bun. On damp hair, spray some Messy Cliché styling spray by Tecni.ART down the lengths of the hair (avoiding the roots) then blow dry. Once the bun is in place (pulling the hair halfway-through the elastic), use a tail comb to separate a few sections and create structure. Spray some shine-enhancing hairspray onto the roots for contrast.

4. Heads up, the vertical 'do

Lengthen and slim the appearance of your face and silhouette with a cunning messy bun and subtle shaping. Before tying the hair into a bun, separate the section at the crown of your head, leaving the hair at the nape free, and use a tail comb to tease the hair slightly for extra volume. Then, flick the hair forward and comb the hair at the nape of the neck lightly and smoothly over the teased section to hide it. Tie hair into a super high pony, and twist it around itself, making sure it remains tall. Secure with bobby pins if necessary and, of course, a spritz of light yet strong-hold hairspray (we recommend experts' favorite, Infinium Pure by L'Oréal Professionnel!)
