Wondering why it is that certain women seem to know exactly how to create a flawless chignon hairstyle? There are a few tricks and tips that will elevate your hair technique to a professional level, but, ssshhh, don't tell everyone...
Chignon hairstyle: expert step-by-step
Whether it's for a wedding, party or even an everyday look, here's how to do a sleek yet voluminous chignon hairstyle.
Step 1: prep your hair for volume
Give your hair natural-looking volume by using the right haircare before styling. We recommend the Intra-Cylane™and Hydralight to purify, hydrate and boost the hair's volume.
Step 2: give hair hold and texture
Prevent your style from slipping out by applying a light-hold gel like Fix Move from Tecni.ART onto part-dried hair before blow-drying smooth. Top tip: blow-dry with your head down for extra body, but without the frizz. For a maxi-voluminous chignon style, check step 2b) below, otherwise continue to step 3.
Step 2b): Extra volume with backcombing
For textured volume and an XXL chignon, use a brush to gently backcomb the lengths of the hair that lie just underneath the top layer. Once backcombed, you can smooth over the top sections and the hair will look naturally voluminous even before you style your chignon.
Step 3: position your chignon
When positioned near the top of the head, a chignon hairstyle can be extremely flattering. It elongates your neck and overall silhouette, showing off your face structure and drawing attention to the eyes. Flick your head over and use an elastic to tie a ponytail just below the top point of your head. Leave your bangs free if you prefer some length at the front, or if the sections are too short to pull into the bun.
Step 4: a quick and easy chignon bun
Take the ponytail by the tip and twist it so that it naturally curls in and around itself at the base. Use a bobby pin to secure the ends and any other sections which may have come loose (this can happen when your hair is layered).
Step 5: How to get volume at the top
You can leave your chignon there, if you want a discreet updo, but if not here's how you can get even more volume at the top and back. Use a tail comb and slide it under the front section of hair, about 3-5 inches from the hairline, and gently tease the hair up. Fix with a strong hold hairspray like Infinium Strong.
Step 6: Shaping the back of the chignon hairstyle
Repeat this teasing technique using your tail comb with the hair at the back of the head, being careful not to pull the hair out completely. Use bobby pins to secure any sections that look as if they might drop out at the back. Finish with a light mist of hairspray over the entire hairstyle.

Braided bun: instead of twisting a ponytail to achieve a chignon bun, braid the ponytail and just wrap it around itself before securing. The result is an intriguing and pretty textured style.
Low chignon: a chignon for short hair is doable, but it needs to stay low otherwise it'll drop out. This is also a favorite go-to for an everyday hairstyle for all hair lengths.
Messy chignon: When teasing the hair for extra volume, don't worry about pinning back any loose sections. Messy chignons are on-trend this season, although we still recommend you apply hairspray to avoid the chignon from slipping entirely.
