Oscars 2017: short vs. long glamorous hairstyles

Janelle Monàe's messy pixie vs. Emma Stone's long waves

There may have been a best picture award mishap last night, but there were none in the beauty department! Two of our personal favorite celebrity hairstyles were Janelle Monàe's messy pixie and Emma Stone's glamorous retro waves. Which style do you like more?

Janelle Monàe's messy pixie

The hairstyle: Janelle Monàe is known for her statement hairstyles, like her iconic graphic bun. Last night she stunned everyone with a completely new haircut: a messy pixie! The short style brought out her best features, like her bold eyebrows. Her hair color was left dark to compliment her skin tone, but a few highlights would have warmed up her complexion even further.

The style: This hairstyle can be worn day or night. Janelle's dress and golden jeweled headband were very haute couture and perfect for the Oscars, and a great evening look. However, if she had a few barrettes in her hair and more natural-looking makeup, it would have been the ideal look for a coffee date with friends. Texture is one of the most important aspects of the messy pixie, so apply some texturizing spray like Wild Stylers Next Day Hair from Tecni.ART to help you recreate the look.

What the editors say: Short hair is back and more popular than ever this season! A growing number of celebrities are embracing cropped cuts, like Michelle Williams, who sported a platinum pixie at the Golden Globes. If you decide to go for the big chop, schedule an appointment with your hairstylist – they'll help you choose the short style that will look best on you!

Emma Stone's long waves

The hairstyle: Glamorous hairstyles like long, sleek retro waves bring out Emma Stone's gorgeous copper hair color extremely well. This shade is very popular this season, so don't hesitate to try it out! For optimal results, we recommend asking your hairstylist about INOA and copper foilyage (a new technique that will make the color very natural-looking).

The style: Waves like this are meant for a night out on the town! They're sleek, polished, and very retro Veronica Lake glam. Recreate this look at home by applying a dab of Hollywood Waves Siren Waves before curling your hair. Before heading out the door, mist on some Infinium Pure hairspray for shine and to keep the style intact all evening long.

What the editors say: Long, defined waves add sophistication to any look. The La La Land star looked beautiful and extremely chic with this hairstyle while giving her acceptance speech for best actress!
